See No Evil, Say No Evil Review

So, I may or may not have done a significant amount of reading last week. And this might be the first of two reviews I’m posting today. The other one is still a twinkle in my brain, but here’s the first. Steven Saus of Alliteration Ink decided to give me a chance, and he also taught me about technology in the process! He’s also been extremely patient with me about this, as I’ve had it for a few weeks now. Here it is, sir; I hope it was worth the wait!

Looking for a clever, light, hilarious, and totally out-of-the-box collection of fantastic poetry? Alliteration Ink has it! See No Evil, Say No Evil by Matt Betts is fun, quirky, and definitely imaginative.

I received a digital review copy of this book and read it in about an hour. It’s short, but it’s memorable. It takes ideas that are familiar to its readers (including Little Red Riding Hood, Godzilla, and the occasional necessity for a bowl of cereal) and plays with them. The poetry is creative, to the point, and creates excellent mental visuals. Some of the pieces seem more like extremely short stories (about a page and a half), but this adds texture to the overall feel of the work.

There are also humorous drawings between pieces, which adds to the feeling of not so much dragging through a book as skipping through a few alternate dimensions. This makes it excellent for those of us who want to sit down and read, but maybe have shorter attention spans. However, the pieces are tied together by the author’s originality and wit; the reader wants to continue because of curiosity about what Betts will do next.

I really enjoyed this book. I’d say it’s pretty safe for most ages content-wise. It’s not what you want if you’re looking for epic conflict, amazing character development, and a plot full of twists and turns, but not everyone wants that all the time. This would make an excellent coffee-table book for proud nerds everywhere!
